Ajna (The Third Eye Chakra)Location: between the eyebrows
Colour: Indigo Associated Organ: Brain Ajna means "command" and this chakra controls the meditative states of conciousness (Mookerjee, 42). The deity here is Ardhanarisvara symbolising the inseparable Shiva-Shakti which is cosmic unity (Mookerkee, 42). Here for the first time we see a symbolic representation of undivided and indivisible existence in this androgynous deity (Mookerjee, 43). The trascendental realm is watched over by Ardhanarisvara, and it is because of this there is some ambivalence in where the deity appears first. Generally it is usually found in either the Visuddha or Ajna chakra (Goldberg, 71-72). The arch in which this deity resides in a phallic symbol (lingam) representing Atman, pure universal power (Jung, 77). Hakini is the energy principle of this chakra, seated on a lotus here she grants unconditional truth and understanding of non-duality (Tantra Kundalini). It is said that activation of the Ajna chakra can lead to psychic powers, but minimally it will grant the individual utmost clairvoyance and intuition (Tantra Kundalini). |
Jung's Analysis
Jung claims it is difficult to make remarks on the ajna centre as it is a state in which mankind has not readily experienced as a whole. He predicts ajna to be the near future of human conciousness and on these grounds lays out a basic philosophical understanding of the ajna chakra. In the ajna, the ego disappears completely and we dissolve into a non-ego reality (Jung,57). In ajna there is still the experience of the self as being different from God but in sahasrara this is no longer the case (Jung, 57).
